Memorandum
To: All Yosemite National Park Employees
From: Michael J. Tollefson, Superintendent
Subject: El Portal Fitness Center
We are establishing a voluntary employee wellness program to support and
encourage the health and well-being of our workforce, as described in
Director’s Order #57. We have established an El Portal Health and Fitness
Committee, and appointed Mike Michener as our Health and Fitness
Coordinator (HFC) to administer this new program. We would like to extend
an invitation to all park employees to visit and enjoy the benefits of our
brand new El Portal Fitness Center. It is located in the El Portal
Maintenance Complex, in the northwest corner of the Warehouse, next to the
Fire Cache. We encourage all Yosemite NPS employees to participate, as it
benefits us all in creating a stronger workforce and a healthy, happy work
environment. Fitness center membership is currently open to NPS, USGS,
Federal Highways Administration, interagency fire station employees, park
volunteers, and interns.
To apply, visit the El Portal Fitness Center link at
http://www.yose.nps.gov/yosenet/ for the following application materials:
1) membership waiver, 2) PAR-Q and Heart Risk questionnaires, and 3) Rules
of Membership. Submit your signed and completed application in a
confidential (blue) envelope, to the El Portal Fitness Center mailbox in
the Valley Administration Building for processing. The HFC will screen
your confidential health risk questionnaire to determine whether your
condition warrants referral to a physician. Once the HFC has approved your
risk forms, you will be issued a confidential member access code. Please
allow up to 10 days for processing.
Employees should not use work hours to participate in this volunteer
program (this does not apply to those in the mandatory fitness program).
Supervisors are encouraged, however, to allow flexible schedules to
accommodate use of the facility, and to support employee participation in
this program. The fitness center will be open to members 24 hrs per day, 7
days per week.
Best of health to you all!

National Weather Service SkyWarn class - Anyone with an interest in the
weather can become a volunteer Weather Spotter for the National Weather
Service (NWS)!
The Hanford office of the NWS has numerous weather spotters throughout the
San Joaquin Valley, southern Sierra Nevada, and Mojave desert. The training
takes about two hours and will familiarize you with the identification of
hazardous weather for the purpose of reporting these observations to the
forecasters at the NWS office in Hanford. The contribution of Weather
Spotters is significant and can make a huge difference during severe
weather by giving the forecasters eyes and ears in local areas that may
have a lack of quality ground reports. The purpose is the same as the whole
purpose of the NWS as an agency: to save lives and property and enhance the
US economy.
Two training sessions will be held in Yosemite National Park on Thursday,
April 3: at 10:00 am in the El Portal Maintenance and Administration
complex (large break room) and at 2:30 pm in the auditorium behind the
Yosemite Valley visitor center. Spotters that have previously had the
training are reminded that NWS policy is for you to have a refresher
training course every two years to be a renewed spotter.
The training is open to the public. However, due to space limitations, you
must RSVP via e-mail at henk_parson@nps.gov or via phone at 209-379-1140.
