Yosemite Climbing Association Newsletter
Granite Frontiers
This June YCA will host it's second exhibit in the valley museum. Over the
last six months we have been working very hard in conjunction with Park
Service to put together this show, which focuses on the last 140 years of
Yosemite's climbing history. Through much support from The Yosemite Fund
and Royal Robbins, Inc. we have been able to achieve success in putting
this project together.
It's been a long road with many bumps and detours but we've come out with
much to show for it and we hope you can all share this with us. The show
opens the evening of June 6th with a reception from 4:30pm - 6:30pm, hors
d'oeuvres and drinks will be served. So, please come ready to learn learn a
little history and share in the celebration! For those who may not be able
to attend, no worries, as we've the great honor of displaying this exhibit
from June 7th - October 27th in the Yosemite Valley Museum Gallery.
The Nose - 50 Years Later
On November 12th, 1958 Warren Harding reached the summit of El Cap via his
new route up The Nose. This day marked a legendary achievement, one by
which many people still test themselves against and one that opened the
door of potential for many more routes up the monolith.
In great appreciation and respect for the first ascent team and this world
class route there will be a 50th Anniversary celebration in Yosemite this
November. The details as of now are still in the works, but we will keep
you up-to-date on the plans and events.
2008 Yosemite Facelift
Another season has started and where there are people there will be
trash...and so too a Yosemite Facelift. This year the 5th Annual Clean-up
will take place September 24th - 28th. Our staging area will be the same,
in front of the Valley Visitor Center. Any and all participants are
welcome. This year we will focus once again on all roadways, parking areas,
trail heads and trails, climbing areas, camp grounds and every green space
we are allowed. The aim is to maintain and promote a healthy, clean park
with the emphasis on litter prevention. Camping will be available on a
first contact, first serve basis. Folks are already looking for camping, so
please don't hesitate to make your plans. Give us a call (209) 379-2650 or
send an email to yager@inreach.com. We look forward to seeing you this
year!
Redwood Creek Grant
YCA recently applied for a grant to fund the Facelift with Redwood Creek
Wines for their Greater Outdoors Project. Part of the process is based on a
popularity vote, where the public can vote for the nonprofit they like the
most. The public voting period is from June 15th - July 31st.

Park News
The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) and the National Park
Service (NPS) are planning to conduct a "controlled flood" of water from
Hetch Hetchy Reservoir May 27-29. The purpose of this pulse flow is to
examine what pre-dam spring run-off conditions were like downstream of
O'Shaughnessy Dam. This controlled flood will help SFPUC and NPS staff
understand relationships between the Tuolumne River in flood and
groundwater levels, extent of wetlands, and ecological responses to spring
floods.
The Tuolumne River below the dam is presently running at about 80 cubic
feet per second (cfs), but will begin to rise on Tuesday, May 27, peaking
on Wednesday, May 28 at about 6,000 cfs. For comparison, the Merced River
recently peaked at about 4,000 cfs on Saturday, May 17. By Friday, May 30
the river should be back down to about 80 cfs. Be aware of these elevated
flows if planning hikes downstream of Hetch Hetchy Reservoir (e.g.
Poopenaut Valley) during this time. (N. Nicholas - 5/22/08)

Tuolumne & White Wolf Housing
REMINDER
Although the Tioga Road is currently open to administrative staff and soon
to the public, the Housing areas in Tuolumne and White Wolf are not ready
to be occupied.
It should be noted that employees are not authorized to move into this
housing area until their unit is cleared for hantavirus, and water and
sewer/portable toilets are available. We have to restrict the use of the
winter well and septic to avoid possible resource issues.
When units are clear to go, we will send out a message to all supervisors.
Please remember, supervisors are responsible for the check-in and check-out
of each employee assigned to their group of tents or cabins in the Tuolumne
area.
Contact the Housing Office for "Tent/Cabin Occupancy/Vacancy" forms and for
updates on your Tuolumne or White Wolf housing assignment.
Please give our office a call if you have any questions regarding any
housing assignments. (C. Baker - 5/21/08)

KEEP YOUR CAT INDOORS OR ON-LEASH. House cats have recently been observed
roaming outdoors and killing wildlife in park housing areas. Please help
protect Yosemite’s birds and other wildlife by keeping your cat indoors or
on-leash. Free-roaming cats are strictly prohibited by Yosemite National
Park regulations:
Code of Federal Regulations [36CFR2.15 Pets].
Yosemite National Park Pet Policy, condition of the Housing
Assignment Agreement.
Superintendent’s Compendium.
The breeding season for most birds, small mammals, and reptiles has begun,
and baby animals are especially vulnerable to predators. Domestic cats are
instinctive, keenly efficient predators, and are one of the biggest factors
in songbird decline. A conservative estimate is that free ranging house
cats kill 4.4 million birds each day or 1.6 billion birds each year in the
United States alone. Ultimately, cats are not responsible for killing our
native wildlife, their owners are. Please prevent killing of wildlife by
domestic cats by keeping your cat(s) indoors or monitored closely while
on-leash. (N. Nicholas - 5/15/08)
